About the pilot
The bowel (colorectal) cancer screening pilot in Scotland began in April 2000 in NHS Tayside, NHS Grampian and NHS Fife. All men and women aged between 50 and 69 years who were registered with a GP Practice were invited to participate. The pilot is now in its third round, which is the first phase of national rollout.
On 30 August 2005, Andy Kerr, the Scottish Health Minister, announced that the Scottish Bowel Screening Programme will roll out to the rest of Scotland from 2007 onwards inviting all men and women between 50 – 74 years registered with a GP. Other eligible people will also be invited to participate.
Bowel Screening Programme Board
A Programme Board has been appointed to work with NHS Boards and local health professionals to ensure that the new screening programme is rolled out to all NHS Board areas in line with the Minister’s announcement. The group is chaired by Professor Bob Steele, Professor of Surgical Oncology at Dundee.
Their remit is to:
- Oversee and co-ordinate the rollout of the Scottish Bowel Screening Programme
- Approve project plans and a take decisions on all risks and issues
- Sign off all plans in relation to the implementation of the programme
- Receive regular feedback from all groups & allocate further work as required
- Act in an advisory role to National Services Division
- Report to the Scottish Bowel Cancer Framework Group on the progress, timescales and identified issues relating to the project plan
- Assist in the development of quality assurance and publication of standards
- Approve all research studies related to bowel screening
- Recommend a group structure for Phase II and Phase III.
